Plaza Mayor
It is the heart of the city and it was built between 1729 and 1755. It was designed by Churriguera and it is a regular Baroque square of arcaded three-story buildings. It is one of the most amazing squares in Spain and with its many cafés is particularly lively in the evening.

Start your tour from Plaza Mayor, visit the Church of S.Martin, the little Plaza del Corrillo and Plaza del Mercado. Take Calle San Pablo and on your left you will find the Convento de las Dueñas. Go on and visit the Convento de San Esteban. Move southward along Calle San Pablo, pass the Huerto Calixto y Melibea and then turn right in Calle de San Gregorio. You will get to the Roman Bridge. Here you can also visit the Church of Santiago.
Go back to Calle de San Gregorio, and take Calle Tentenecio. You will get to the Cathedral and to the University. Follow Calle Placentinos Traviesa and get to the Clerecia, to the Universitá Pontificia and to Casa de las Conchas.
Other attractions
- La Casa de Las Conchas (House of the Scallope-Shell):it was built in the XV century. Its façade is decorated with scallope-shells associated with Saint James.
- La Clerecía: It is a large twin towered façade baroque church which was built by the Jesuit order.
- Church of San Martín: it is a XI century church and it is located in the little Plaza del Corrillo. It has a Late Romanesque north doorway and a southwest doorway with Palteresque decorations.
- Roman Bridge: southwest of the Old Cathedral on the banks of the Tormes this 27 arches bridge spans the river.
- Casa Lis or Casa del Rector Esperabe: it is an amazing example of early XX century architecture. It hosts the Museum of Art Deco and Art Nouveau.
- Gran Via: it is an interesting example of recent architecture.
