Gastronomy
Salamanca has a particular culinary tradition, largely meat-based.
Do not miss “hinojosa de duero” (a tasty cheese), “lomo iberico” (cured loin pork), “salchichón” (spiced sausage), “chorizo” (higly-seasoned spiced sausage) and the tasty “jamòn” (cured ham).
There are dishes that are considered typical of Salamanca:
- Chafaina: rice with chorizo and meat
- chichas: pork meat
- cochinillo al fuego: roast suckling pig
- hornazo: salty, oven-baked pie, stuffed with ham, sausage, pork loin and cooked egg.
- farinato: sausage with breadcrumbs, pepper and fried eggs.
Honey and almonds are the basic ingredients of most of sweet things and desserts.
- marzapan: marzipan
- bollo maimón: sponge cake
- chochos: anisette biscuits
Restaurants
In Salamanca you can find lots of bars and restaurants where you can taste the local cuisine as well as several international restaurants. The best places are located in the gorgeous Plaza Mayor but if you are looking for some cheapest restaurant head for Plaza del Mercado, Calle Meléndez and Rua Mayor. If you want to eat in a restaurant, look out for the ones with a special tourist menu on the outside. You can save a lot of money and you can have a two or three course meal.
If you prefer you can also try French, Italian Indian, Pakistan, Mexican or Chinese restaurants.
Do not forget:
- Brekfast: before 10 a.m.
- Lunch: between 2 p.m. and 4 pm.
- Dinner: between 9 p.m. and 10.30 p.m.
- Spanish people often go to bars to eat tapas or have a coffee before having lunch and dinner.
